Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which are detailed in the section below.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed. See below for additional guidance on Blind Review.

Author Guidelines

A.MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION: OPEN CALL MANUSCRIPTS

Radical Teacher focuses on the “theory and practice of teaching” from a “socialist, feminist, and anti-racist” perspective. If you have an idea for a possible article within these guidelines, you may either submit a one-page proposal or choose to submit your manuscript without these preliminaries. All submissions will receive full review (see below) if they fit Radical Teacher’s editorial priorities and limits. We strongly recommend that authors familiarize themselves with the magazine before sending manuscripts. We critique articles for their engagement with our social and educational mission, their clarity and their usefulness to our readers.  Correspondence, proposals, and manuscripts should be sent electronically using the manuscript submission tools at http://radicalteacher.library.pitt.edu.

B. MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION: “CLUSTERS”

Our website includes announcements of forthcoming issues where a cluster of essays will focus on a specific topic. The review process for cluster articles is the same as for out-of-cluster submissions: if suitable, they will be forwarded to board members for review. For cluster articles, contributors correspond with the designated cluster editors (announced in the CFP) rather than the Managing Editors. Unlike “open call” manuscripts, which can be submitted any time, cluster CFPs have specific deadlines in order to meet publication schedule. Late submissions that miss a cluster deadline can nonetheless be forwarded to the general Managing Editors for consideration as Open Call submissions. If we end up publishing a second installment of the same cluster, late submissions may be forwarded again to the cluster editors.

FORMAT FOR ALL SUBMISSIONS (Open Call and Clusters)

1. Radical Teacher articles are typically 4,000 - 6,000 words, though we consider shorter or longer submissions.

2. Submissions should be in a Word document format, double-spaced, pages numbered.

3. While Radical Teacher does not require a uniform citation style, submitted papers must be internally consistent in their use of their chosen citation style, be it APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.

4. Footnotes are not allowed. Endnotes are discouraged, but if they are used they should NOT be automatically generated; they should be entered by the author using superscripts. We prefer in-text citations.

5. The body of the article should begin with a title page, but not include the author’s name or other identifying information. Consult the Radical Teacher website for information about ensuring a blind review of your article.

BLIND REVIEW

To ensure the integrity of the blind peer-review for submission to this press, every effort should be made to prevent the identities of the authors and reviewers from being known to each other. This involves the authors, editors, and reviewers (who upload documents as part of their review) checking to see if the following steps have been taken with regard to the text and the file properties:

1. The authors of the document have deleted their names from the text, with "Author" and year used in the references and footnotes, instead of the authors' name, article title, etc.

2. With Microsoft Office documents, author identification should also be removed from the properties for the file (see under File in Word), by clicking on the following, beginning with File on the main menu of the Microsoft application: File > Save As > Tools (or Options with a Mac) > Security > Remove personal information from file properties on save > Save.

3. With PDFs, the authors' names should also be removed from Document Properties found under File on Adobe Acrobat's main menu.

General Submissions

  1. MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION
    1. Process for Considering Unsolicited, "Open Call" Manuscripts

If you would like feedback on an article in advance of a full manuscript, please upload a one-page proposal describing the project.  An editor will then respond. All submissions will receive full review (see below) if they fit RT's editorial priorities and limits. We strongly recommend that authors familiarize themselves with the magazine before sending manuscripts. Do check back issues, keeping in mind RT's focus on the "theory and practice of teaching" and its self-definition as "socialist, feminist, and anti-racist."

When we get an unsolicited article, unless it is clearly outside our boundaries, the Managing Editors send it to readers from the editorial group. The Managing Editors also evaluate the article. Usually some readers will be fairly expert in the subject of the article, while others will be in different areas or levels of educational work. We critique articles for current knowledge usable by our readers and for general interest and readability.

When all the readings are in, the Managing Editors weigh the readers' opinions and make a decision based on them. That decision may be a plain "accept" or "reject," or it may be one of the following: (1) We will accept the article based on specified revisions. (2) We encourage revision, provide suggestions (often detailed), and offer to work with the writer, but do not guarantee publication. (3) We tell the authors that we would be glad to read a drastic revision or a different kind of essay on the same subject. We always try to give authors helpful criticism and to get the article and the critique back to them in a timely fashion. When re-submitted, revisions may go to the original readers or to new readers from the editorial group.

The Radical Teacher Managing Editors can be reached at radicalteacher@mail.pitt.edu

    2. Process for Submitting Manuscripts for specific "Clusters" as announced in RT's Calls for Papers (CFPs)

Our website includes announcements of forthcoming issues where a cluster of essays will focus on a specific topic. Articles written for such a cluster may have been solicited from authors or developed in response to the CFP. The review process for cluster articles is the same as for out-of-cluster submissions: if suitable, they will be forwarded to board members for review. For "cluster" articles, contributors correspond with the designated cluster editors (announced in the CFP) rather than the Manuscript Editors.

Unlike "open call" manuscripts, which can be submitted any time, cluster CFPs have specific deadlines in order to meet publication schedule. Late submissions that miss the deadline can nonetheless be forwarded to the general Managing Editors for consideration as out-of-cluster submissions. If we end up publishing a second installment of the same cluster, late submissions may be forwarded again to the cluster editors.

  2. FORMAT FOR ALL SUBMISSIONS (Open Call and Clusters)
    1. Radical Teacher articles are typically 4,000 -- 6,000 words, though we consider shorter or longer submissions.

Teaching Notes

Is there a book, film, essay, poem, or story that you've found particularly useful in the classroom and want to share with other Radical Teacher readers? We are especially interested in Teaching Notes on new materials not widely known, but we would also like to hear about newly rediscovered older works, as well as new ways of teaching familiar ones.

Or has something challenging, encouraging, or frustrating happened in class?  If you think our readers can learn from your experience -- whether you handled things well, handled them badly, or are still trying to decide – we’d like to hear about it.

Contributions should run about 500 to 1,500 words.  If you’d like to see some sample Teaching Notes, check out the CURRENT issue and the ARCHIVES on this site.

Please submit your Teaching Note through this web site and also send an e-mail, with the header "Teaching Note," to: rosenr@wpunj.edu
